KIRKBYMOORSIDE'S SLEEP-OUT SUCCESS 2008
Timing was perfect for the All Saints sleep-out for York Nightstop on January 31 – the night before all that Siberian snow! It was bitterly cold and windy, but we stayed dry and most of us were warm enough in our sleeping bags and cardboard boxes. Les and Angela braved the doorways so got the full blast of the ‘Beast from the East’... but did a fantastic job raising awareness amongst pub-goers and passers-by. Those in the churchyard had an number of inquisitive visitors, too... at regular intervals throughout the night! But the most welcome were those who brought tea, cooked bacon, and supplied porridge.
Here’s how one churchyard sleep-outer summed up the night:
- I don't remember ever feeling so vulnerable during any night under the stars as I did on Saturday. What must that feel like for a young person who has undergone traumatic experience at home?
- It is not an "easy option" and the danger is that young people see it in a glamorous way. Hopefully, the experience of the young people on Saturday will make them aware and enable them to pass on to their friends how challenging it is.
- How lucky are we?
- I am so looking forward to the comfort of my mattress and pillow and the warm embrace of my family this evening. What must it feel like not to have that prospect?
- "Would you walk by on the other side?" - even less now than I might have done before!
Thank you to all who so generously supported us: with sponsorship, encouragement, nourishment, cardboard boxes and publicity. You have helped raise an amazing £1500+ for the work of York Nightstop in the Ryedale area, keeping young homeless people off the streets and out of hostels. Some of this money will also be used to provide them with vouchers for a hot meal during the day. All thanks to you!

*** Floods Affecting Kirby Mills, Keldholme and Kirkbymoorside****
As most residents are aware the heavy rains on Saturday 6th September caused flash flooding affecting Kirby Mills and Keldholme in particular. The water level was higher than before and the road to the industrial estate had to be closed as it was also flooded. In light of this and other recent problems with flooding in Church Street, Gillamoor Road and Park Lane, the Town Council has called for a discussion with all the agencies/partners who are concerned with this issue. Watch this site for updates or contact the Town Clerk via the Town Council Office in The Shambles.
Update
A meeting was arranged for Wednesday 15 October 2008 and was a multi agency meeting which discussed ways forward working in partnership. A full report on the meeting is available by clicking here. Anyone wishing to learn more about a proposed Residents' Action Group should contact the Town Clerk or Councillor Stuart Brown.
Community Projects
Over the years the Town Council has worked in partnership with several bodies and sought funding for several projects, the A170 roundabout and the planting of a hedge at Manor Vale woodland and the Ryedale View Play Area. The Renaissance Market Town team and the publication 'Kirkbymoorside Our Future', which was created in partnership with Yorkshire Forward, played an important part in identifying 2 of the projects - the redesigning of the A170 roundabout and the creation of Mosaic panels for the Ryedale View play area.
Mosaic Panels Ryedale View Play Area:
The idea for this project was first highlighted in the Renaissance Market Town Team publication ‘Our Future’, which was the result of an open consultation with the town by Yorkshire Forward. Funding for the project was obtained from Yorkshire Forward’s Rural Target Fund, Ryedale District Council and the Town Council.
An artist from Rural Arts was employed and the designs for the panels were agreed during open workshops held over Easter week in the town. The workshops proved very popular and residents ranging from 6 to 60 took part.
The A170 Roundabout
The In Bloom group, who are a dedicated group of volunte
ers, developed as a sub group of the RMT team and identified the roundabout as a project for funding. A design was selected and presented to the Town Council and funding was successfully sought from the Rural Target Fund. Permission was granted from County Council for the Town Council to take over the maintenance of the roundabout and the go ahead was given for the new design. It is hoped to introduce a sponsorship scheme to cover future maintenance costs.

Manor Vale Woodland
The Manor Vale woodland is owned and maintained by the Town Council and a management committee, which consists of councillors and members of the public, together with advisors. The Committee meets every 3 months for a site visit and subsequent meeting. The Committee decided to plant a hawthorn hedge along an exposed area on the top path and were successful in a funding bid to the Rural Target Fund. The hedge has now been planted and is doing well.
